Adult & Family

This year, Marlborough Summer is introducing several adult and family classes for our community. It’s an opportunity to learn something new, and also to spend some time as a family doing something different.

For Summer 2019, we will offer the following:

Family

Empowered Family

Session Dates: Saturday, July 20
9:00 am – 1:00 pm
The Empowered Family workshop works with the WHOLE FAMILY! While your kids (ages 6-12) are learning to defend themselves and set boundaries, you will also learn to defend yourself, set boundaries, and how to help your children navigate their way through their lives in an empowered and confident manner.

This class will give students the opportunity to practice in real-life role playing scenarios with an anonymous “threatening person.” The padded instructor enables students to face and appropriately respond to the current issues in their lives, such as: bullying, teasing and uncomfortable touching.

Ceramics

Session Dates: July 6, 13, 19
10:00 am -12:00 pm
Everyone remembers the fun of Ceramics class! You will learn how to use both the potter's wheel and hand building techniques to create one of a kind works of art! Plates, bowls, cups, and vases will be created, along with any other items you dream up. You will learn how to form, sculpt, and carve the clay. Once the artwork is bisque fired (first firing), you will learn how to further embellish your creations by using glazes and other surface design methods. Creative ideas and bold interpretation of projects are always encouraged. Your home will be filled with beautiful ceramic art to enjoy!

Learn to Make Books

Session Dates: June 24 - July 26
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3-4:30 pm
Learn how to create your own folded, sewn and glued books that can become sketchbooks, diaries, travel journals, recipe holders, scrapbooks and more! You will learn what signatures are and how to use them, how to create the flag, folded fan, single signature, side-bound, accordion fold with pockets, fireworks and tunnel book structures, as well as how to make one-of-a-kind sculptural books! We will explore paper marbling, one and two cut pop-up forms, found writing techniques, altered pages and more in this not-to-be missed class. You will have the opportunity to develop your own content for your books guided by your own passions and interests and delve into design, composition and color ideas. Join us to discover and share the wide world of book arts and its rich creative possibilities.

Adult

Challenge Accepted

Session Dates: June 24 - July 26
Period 1: 8:15 am - 9:10 am
Fitness is a general state of health and well-being both mentally and physically. Need a jumpstart to get going? Already in-shape and trying to reach a new fitness level? Taught by personal trainer Chris Rodgers, this course is designed specifically to help adults reach their fitness goals. From TRX and bodyweight exercises, to light dumbbell and kettlebell workouts, to “butt-kicking” cardio, we’ve got you covered. This class isn’t a walk at the beach. You will work hard (at your level) and see amazing results. Once you start to see results, it becomes addicting! Challenge posed…do you accept?

Infant and Child CPR and Choke Saving

Session Dates: Saturday, June 29 or Saturday, July 13
9:00 – 11:30 am
Learn vital skills to handle a true emergency. This American Heart Association approved CPR certification class covers a lot of ground: recognizing an infant or child in distress, performing emergency measures to relieve airway obstruction in a choking infant or child, performing CPR on an infant or child who is not breathing or is without a heartbeat and identifying risks of preventable infant and childhood injuries. What sets this class apart from others is that we also discuss food allergies, safe food preparation, child-proofing, and other key prevention and safety measures. This is a great class for parents, family members, and childcare providers.

Mindful Movement for Parents

Session Dates: June 24 - July 26
Period 1: 8:15 am - 9:10 am
Period 2: 9:15 am - 10:10 am

The end of the school year represents a fresh opportunity to reconnect with our kids and partners. We aim the latest neuroscience, tools and advice at them, along with our resolve to be more compassionate, calm and less judgmental.

Mindfulness supports the desire to live in harmony with our families and ourselves, inviting us to switch from “doing” mode into “being” mode, while observing thoughts, feelings and sensations with awareness. Mindfulness alerts us to negative patterns of reactivity or beliefs that impede our growth and happiness, and that of our kids.’ We can find peace of mind, rejuvenation and balance.

We invite you to join this course for parents that will offer mindfulness meditation, yoga-based movement and discussion to help relieve stress and foster a greater sense of well-being. All levels of experience are welcome. Participants will come away with a simple and supportive practice for themselves and their kids that will allow them to begin again at any moment.

The Price of Fortune: Oil, Politics & How Family Secrets Shaped the History of Los Angeles

Session Dates: Saturday, June 29 and Saturday, July 13
9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Unsolved murder & national political scandal have forever colored the Doheny family name. This seminar-style class explores the life, times, and current mysteries surrounding one of Los Angeles' most influential families. Part-forensics/ part-history/ part ghost story- we'll peel back the mystery that engulfed Greystone, their crowning architectural legacy. Through this family's glorious, often dark, past- we will explore how their ambitions and secrets shaped the city and nation we now call home. If possible, this class will include a visit to the Doheny family compound at USC as well as their Greystone Mansion.
